Unfortunately but also fortunately, it came from a dark place that I found my love for movement. When I graduated uni, being young and full of life and opportunities, excitement and hopefulness should have been running through my veins; but instead, I found myself heading towards a deep depression.
I was fortunate enough to have a dear friend be brutally honest with me and make me realise that feeling like I was living in a state of helplessness was not normal and it was not OK.
I took action, got help and started running and swimming. Walking out of the pool one day, I saw a group of excited people buzzing to get into a class, what was it? Zumba. And just like that, I found my love for dance, I had found myself.
I have since become very mindful that we are not always OK and that’s OK too; and as important as it is to let emotions be and not fight them, I feel it is equally as important to be aware of them and learn to cope when we are not OK; and movement does that for me. Movement and exercise for me is a way to reset our bodies and our minds, it releases all those feel good hormones that remind us of how awesome life is. Movement for me is a celebration of being alive.
